Financial affidavits and children’s details don’t belong in a chatbot.
Family matters hold some of the most personal information a firm keeps. Candor helps keep it out of outside AI tools, and records how AI was used on each matter.
Where AI goes wrong in this work
- Drafting help from AI often starts with a paste: account balances, Social Security numbers, children’s names and birth dates, a home address that may need to stay private, counseling or medical history.
- When AI use changes what the client is billed, ABA Formal Opinion 512 and Florida Bar Ethics Opinion 24-1 both connect it to what the client is told.
- Motions and memoranda cite authority, and AI can invent it.
What Candor does about it
- Screening flags Social Security and account numbers, dates of birth, addresses, medical terms and dollar figures before the text leaves, and hands back a redacted copy.
- Each use carries a data label (public, internal, client confidential or privileged) and a flag for whether it affects the bill, which prompts the client-disclosure record.
- Matter walls limit each person in Candor to the matters their own Clio login can open.
- Citations are flagged for a second look, and the attorney signs off before the work goes out.
Screening and citation flags reduce risk; they don’t remove it. The attorney’s review is what counts, and Candor records it. Background: ABA Opinion 512 · Florida Bar Ethics Opinion 24-1.
